Three Reasons To Remember !

Garrett - McLean - Carr

In November of 1999, a Vietnam Veteran who just so happened to have served with me in K Troop, sent Feedback to me through this website.  When I saw his name I recognized it as being vaguely familiar but I couldn't place him.   Well, he called me on the telephone and we talked about our shared experiences in K Troop.

Gary G. Coates told me that he was from Whitehall, Illinois and that he was a family man and working at a job that he loved.  I shared something of my family life.   During the conversation Gary asked me if I remembered Sgt. Garrett - McLean and Carr.  They were all three killed on February 7, 1969.   They had encountered a soldier of the Viet Cong and were attempting to negotiate a surrender.  The enemy soldier tossed a hand grenade in their direction and killed them all.

ThombstonesSadly I told Gary that I didn't remember them, all though I'm sure that they must have come through my chow line for many a meal.  I searched my historical documents (letters tapes, etc) to see if I could find some mention of them.  There was none.

These men were especially close to Gary - brothers you might say.  And because they were K Troopers they were close to us all.  Gary asked me if there was someway that I could honor them on K Troop, 11th ACR, Vietnam hosted by Bob Hersey and so I'm proud to fulfill Gary's request.
