24 days and a wake up

Dear Mom & Dad,

Greetings once again from Vietnam.  I received a letter from each of your today.   It was good to hear from you as always.  So glad to hear that my tape recorder and speakers came.  No doubt by now, the TV and radio have arrived too.  I received a receipt from the mail order house saying that my order had been filled and that shipment was completed on 10 March.  Here is what I ordered.

                        1.    Tape Recorder
                        2.    Two Speakers For Tape Recorder
                        3.    One Sony TV
                        4.    One Sony TV Battery
                        5.    One Sony Radio

So let me know as soon as they all arrive.

I received my orders two days ago and as of now, I leave April the 8th, so I got a four day "drop".  As soon as I get my port call I will know exactly what date but according to my alert orders, I leave on the 8th.

This is the situation.  I have changed my plans.  To save a lot of confusion I am not going to fly to Tampa.  I will fly from wherever I land to Logan Airport in Boston.  The reason is because there is a good chance that I will go to Ft. Dix and not Oakland and I will not have my port call instructions soon enough to let you know one way or the other.  So, to play it safe, I will fly to Boston then we can go on down to Florida together and I can help you drive down.

One thing Dad.  Will I be covered under your insurance plan to be able to drive your new car?  I hope so.  I would very much like to drive it.

Well, my field days are finally over.  I will not be going out to the filed again.   The Mess Sargent sent our new cook out to the field today for one week so when he comes back, I will be too short to go out.  Right now, I have 24 days and a wake up.   I am really getting short.

As of yet, there is no official orders on my six month extension.  I am getting a little worried.  I checked with my squadron personnel office and they said that the paperwork was sent to regiment on the 3rd of March.  It would seem to me that I should have heard by now.  I really don't care one way or the other.  I wouldn't mind either place a whole hell of a lot.  It's six of one and half a dozen of another, I guess.  Either way, don't worry needlessly about it.

If I can survive one year in a combat outfit I sure as hell can survive six months in the R&R center of Vung Tau in a non-combat unit.  So don't worry about it.   Like I say, I will be flying into Logan sometime around the 8th of April so keep yourselves handy so that you can pick me up there.  I will call you as soon as I arrive in the states, whether it be Oakland or Ft. Dix.

I will be staying here at Bien Hoa with the mess hall until five days prior to my leaving.  I will then go to Blackhorse and process out and then come back to Bien Hoa and go to the 90th Replacement Battalion one day before my flight leaves.  So that's about it in a nutshell.

I am enclosing a copy of my alert orders to Ft. Benning.  I am suppose to be going to an Airborne training unit.  As I say, I don't really care.  All I want is to finish my time and get out.

Dave leaves here on the 25th of this month and he says he would like to stop and say hello.  If he has the time he says that he will stop.  I received Ginger Crowley's information on the new Pontiacs.  He said that he can let me have the LeMans I wanted for $2700.  This is $70 cheaper than what I can get it for over here so I will have a talk with him when I get home.  I would like to get a new one but I will have to wait and see.

I hope to hell Dad that you can get those guys at "Stereo Studio" to get that stereo fixed before I get home.  I would hate like hell to get involved with a legal suit with those people but this thing is getting out of hand.  It's ridiculous.   I definitely will be taking it one way or another with me to Ft. Benning so they best get their head out of their ass and get that thing fixed.

Well, that's about all I have got for now.  I am looking forward to seeing you again in a few short weeks so take care and I will see you soon.

By for now!

Love,
Bob
