Dear Mom & Dad,
Greetings once again from Vietnam. Well, I received your letter, Dad of the 20th,
last night and your letter, Ma of the 22nd, today. You asked if I received your $50
check. Yes, I did. Thanks. A also received your package and the latest
Playboy which came yesterday. So, I have received everything up to date.
Perhaps you might be a little confused as to what my plans are. They are really
quite simple. Let me explain. I have received orders to go to Ft. Benning,
Georgia. I have put in a request for a six month extension here. Now, it is
just a matter of one taking precident over the other. There is still nothing
official, yet. It will either be going to Vung Tau for six months or Ft. Benning for
eight months. Let me say, the chances of Vung Tau are a little better than Ft.
Benning. Myself, I would much rather go to Vung Tau for six months than to Ft.
Benning for eight. Believe me, I know what I am doing.
As for Thailand, I have given up all hope of ever going back there. I can't
even re-enlist for three years and be guaranteed Thailand so I said, "the hell with
re-enlisting." All I want now is to get out and the sooner the better. Of
course, I will be able to explain it a lot better when I get home. There is much you
don't understand.
Things here are going well. Today is pay day. I am completely broke but
before the day is out I will be a wealthy man again. I guess I wrote and told you
that we are no longer in Bien Hoa but we have moved to Tan Son Nhut. We moved the
day before the offensive started in that area. So, I guess we got out in the nick of
time.
It's nice here at Tan Son Nhut. The troop is with us now. We have moved
about 300 meters down the road from our last
location and are no longer cooking with the 82nd Air Borne unit. We are feeding breakfast and supper so this is pretty good. I
have only been to Saigon once so far and that was
only to the bars. We didn't have a pass and we got stopped by the MPs at the gate
but they let us go. I will be going to Saigon for the whole day on Wednesday so I
hope to have a good time.
Actually, things are going pretty good. The only complaint that I have is that
time is not going fast enough. I am looking forward to my Florida vacation - a well
deserved one.
Please don't worry about me. Everything is OK and I'll see you in about 42 days.
So, take care and . . .
By for now!
Love,
Bob
