I served with 2nd Field Force, 7th Battalion, 8th Artillery in 1970. Battalion Headquarters was a Bien Hoa. When I arrived in country, I was sent to Blackhorse Base Camp. We had two 175mm self-propelled Howitzers there for a few months. Enjoyed the trips down to Xuan Loc, if you know what I mean? Great web site.Welcome Home and God Bless you and your family.

I truly enjoyed exploring your site. I was in the Army from 12/68-12/70 (drafted). My MOS was 96C2L29 (Interrogator/German Language). Fortunately, I was not sent to Vietnam, bur rather I served in a small Military Intelligence Unit in Passau, Germany. I just referred your site to a buddy of mine who served in a self-propelled Howitzer Unit in Vietnam. Best wishes to you and your family.

A few months ago I was in your web site after reading your story on military.com. As a former 94B20 and a V. Vet it peak my interest and read though your site and e-mailed you. This was some time ago. However, the other night I was watching the Army Chief competition and up popped a picture of VN cooking with a black leather bag. I didn’t recognize the picture but I recognize the bag. Great picture of franks and beans in a can and C4, this is now a part of VN war history.

Keeping the faith

I am looking for someone that was in K Troop in April, 1968 who remembers me. We were South of Saigon and were called out to help an infantry company in contact with the VC. A tank was struck by an RPG. It backed up and hit my track, turned it over and burned. We backed off because my track was the demolition track. The captain of the infantry company got hit when he jumped on the back of the tank. He was medivaced. If you remember this, I would like to hear from you.

Allons,

Jimmy Rogers

I was at M Company 3/11th for six months then I came to K Troop 3/11th. I hope all are doing well. I was away for eight months sick. I came up with a new name.

Dear Bob and Hellen,

Thank you for your tribute to our K Troop brother Homer Pittman. I hope you and Hellen got to know Homer during the last two reunions. Homer was a special soldier, a leader, and a warior. He made a difference and his leadership enabled young soldiers to return home from Vietnam alive and well. I will miss Homer Pittman. Thanks again for your fine work on the web page. I can't attend the Nashville reunion, but I'll see you guys in Eugene, OR.

Fantastic site. I served in Fulda from MAR 80-OCT 82. I was assigned to 340th ASA CO, which later became 511th MI CO. I have many memories of the place, and several of them are even pleasant! However, the amateur historian in me is the one that is really reminiscent: I consider my tour in Fulda to be the epitome of my service in the Cold War - you couldn't get much closer in that part of the world, literally facing your enemy across minefields... Seeing as how we 'won', I hope those former DDR border guards were able to find gainful employment.

I am interested in locating anyone who may have served in Vietnam with my father, James "Decker" Dickinson who was a spec.4 in the 11th Armored Calvary. I believe his tour was from 69 to 70.

When I first arrived in country and while on my first guard duty at Blackhorse base camp, I was placed on the bunker by the south gate and was told that the guys the night before had fallen asleep on guard duty and got their throats cut in the night. True or not I had no problem staying awake that night, not did I ever fall asleep on guard duty during my whole in country tour.

My father is the Capt. mentioned in this site. He is and always will be my greatest hero. There is not a day that goes by that I don't wish that I was more like him. Also, thank you to everyone who has served and is still serving in the armed forces.

A very good site. The layout of base camp is great. I always thought of it as the general shape of a 5-inch gun turret on a navy destroyer. I didn't know where the units were, except around my part. Not to get too nitpicky, but we of Air Cav Troop never thought of ourselves as a 'support unit.' In the TOE, Air Cav is listed as much a part of the regiment as any of the squadrons.

I had never thought about the web as being a great source for information and connections for anyone that was lucky enough to be associated to the Black Horse, until yesterday. I met a gentleman that had the black horse for a license plate frame and was ecstatic to have seen someone else that was assigned to the Blackhorse. I motioned him over and began to chat with him about his time in Vietnam, unfortunately I was unable to contribute to his recollections since I was assigned to the 3/11 and was in Germany many years after his tour with the 1/11. Needless to say he mentioned that there was quite a wealth of information and communication for all of the Blackhorse on the web, so here I am. I applaud you for all of your efforts in bringing all of us a bit closer together. It is quite nice to remember the many memories from Bad Hersfeld.

Former: Sgt, E5, Squad Leader 106MM R.R. Served: 1961-1964, Ft. Riley, Kansas Units: Co.A, 2 Bg. 12Th. Inf. Reg. 1961-1963 Co.E, 1St Bn. 16Th. Inf. Reg. 1963-1964 Both these Units were part of the 1St. Infantry Division" THE BIG RED ONE". During this ... Cold War Era .. period. Would greatly appreciate any information about or responses from former members of either of these units. The 2/12th was disbanded at Ft. Riley, shortly after I left. The 1/16th went to Vietnam after I was discharged in 1964. Fellow members of that outfit would have been there 1965-66 possibly 1967. Just found out today that after I left the 2nd. Bg. 12Th. Inf. they were re-designated the 2nd. Bn. 18Th.Inf. and after arriving in Nam the 1st Bn. 16th. Inf. became the 5th Bn. 60th. Inf.

The message board for the Society of the First Infantry Division is now up and running.
