Dear Mom & Dad,

Greetings once again from Vietnam.  Here I am in the field.  I left Bien Hoa yesterday at 3:00 PM.  We are still operating around Phou Loa.  Our tactics have changed a little.  We are no longer acting as blocking forces but we are on search and destroy assaults.  While I am in the field I have been assigned to HQ Platoon's 4-0 (Four Zero) track.  Right now there are only three guys on 4-0 s I am filling in as their left machine gunner.  The machine gun is the M-60 just in case you were wondering.

I will be out here a week then I will go back to the squadron trains area at Bien Hoa for a week.  This time, they decided to send two cooks out to the field instead of just one so I have another cook with me.  Dave is probably back at base camp by now.   He should be joining up with us pretty soon.  I'm interested in hearing about Hong Kong.  He will also be coming out to the field shortly.  I kind of like it out here in the field.  All of my buddies are out here and there isn't too much to do back as Bien Hoa.  We don't live all that bad out here and we are pretty secure.

In some cases, we are safer here in the field than base camp.  We heard that last night, base camp (Blackhorse) took over 100 20mm rocket hits.  Luckily, there were only three killed.  So, one never knows over here.  Since I have been here in the field we have made only light contact with the enemy.  We have seen plenty of signs but very little of the VC.

There is a tremendous lull in the fighting here.  Perhaps you have heard on the news, they thing that the VC are trying to de-escalate.  I think that they just have had it.  Something is going to happen soon.

I hope things are going well for you back in the world.  The summer is almost over.  I imagine that you hate to see it go.  I can't wait to se it go along with fall, winter and spring.  Oh well, my time will come.  I must sign off now.   Things are going well and I'm have a good time. Ha, ha!

By for now!

Bob
