He was my Track Commander....I was with him, Carr and SSGT Garrett on the
search that day....SSGT Garrett had just told me to give the radio to Medic
Gary Coats and I went in with these three...

"High School Friend"

Relationship: Friend From High School
We went to East Detroit High School together. Don was a great athlete and was always
willing to help out where he could. He didn't belittle us underclassmen. He
helped guide us and really knew how to build up your abilities and confidence to achieve
your goals. I had enlisted in the Air Force and was serving as an advisor at
Binh-Thuy AB in the Delta when I heard of Don's death. It was very hard to know that
the guy who had helped me so many times at home was so close to us in the Nam and we
weren't there to help him when he needed us. I never knew what exactly happened that
day but I have always hoped it was quick and that he didn't suffer. He was a great
man and will never be forgotten as long as I'm alive. My father is buried in the
next section over from Don and I visit him every time I go to see my Dad.

I will Never forget this day the remarks that I made to a comrade, only a few minutes
before. Then seeing you laying there on the ground. I only wished that I had
been more at myself to have checked you better or to have done more for you.

"Sleep Peacefully Donnie"

Donald McLean was a kind and loving person. I never heard him raise his voice nor heard
him say an unkind word about anyone. He had a wonderful smile that made people feel
comfortable and at home. I would like others to know about this gentle soul who made
the ultimate sacrifice. Hollywood has failed to portray these men and women.
Sleep peacefully, Donnie, Lord knows, you deserve it!
Love & Hugs,
Patti

I too am called Donald McLean. I know little of you but to read of your short life
saddens me immensely as we are kinsmen. Sleep well Donnie - a little part of you
will someday rest with me.
